The Glass Gallery sells a wide range of decorative British studio glass alongside Julia’s own etched bowls and panels.
We are open to visitors 5 days a week for most of the year. (we also exhibit in art fairs around the UK and even take the occasional holiday but we always post on our website and social media pages when we will be closed)
Julia sandblasts original designs onto colourful hand blown lead crystal bowls. The etching eats into the glass leaving her pattern permanently on the surface. She is inspired by nature, especially the sea. Her patterns range from aquatic animals such as turtles and seahorses to iconic garden plants such as snowdrops and sunflowers.
There is a wide selection of work from our selected artists; from scent bottles to stained glass panels, vases, tea lights, paperweights and a large collection of jewellery all made from or with glass. Prices start from under £10.
All the glass is designed and made in the UK but most of the artists are based in the Scottish Border and Northumberland.
The techniques our artists use include hand blowing, stained and leaded glass, fusing, lamp work and sandblasting.
The Glass Gallery is within Julia Linstead’s glass studio so visitors can watch Julia work and talk to her about techniques and inspiration.
The Gallery is part of the Hirsel Homestead on The Hirsel country park in Coldstream. The Homestead is also home to several other artists including a potter whose workshops can be visited when the artists are in residence.
There is also a café and farm shop with outside seating and picnic tables by the lake. There are public toilets within the homestead. The country park and toilets are open from dawn to dusk all year. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the estate, museum and exhibition. Visitors are free to explore the country park there are woodland and riverside walks and an accessible walk around the core of the estate. We have many ancient trees and a herd of highland cattle who have calves every year. The spring bulbs starting with snowdrops then aconites, crocuses, daffodils, and bluebells are gorgeous. The large square in the Homestead has a small children’s playground, a museum of rural life and a photography exhibition showing the estate throughout the year.
There is a small charge levied by the The Hirsel Estate as a parking fee but this is towards the upkeep of the parklands, walks and facilities at the Homestead such as the toilets and children’s playground.
